The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks a highly motivated professional to join its Finance team. The Controller is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Foundation’s accounting function. This position will ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.  The Controller plays a critical role in ensuring the Foundation serves as a good steward of its resources by providing complete and accurate reporting for budget managers. 

Duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Supervises, mentors, develops, and trains members of the Foundation’s accounting team. 
  • Establishes, monitors, and enforces internal controls to ensure proper accounting policies and procedures are in place and operating as intended.  Maintains and reviews the Foundation’s policies and procedures manual as necessary and ensures the Foundation is following industry leading practices.
  • In conjunction with IT department, manages accounting system, including maintenance of the chart of accounts. Evaluates effectiveness of such systems and offers recommendations for enhancements, as needed.
  • Drives continual process improvement efforts, including those that streamline and automate accounting processes.
  • Oversees all transactional accounting, including but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash and cash equivalents, investments, revenue, gift and endowment accounting.
  • Liaises with Advancement team to ensure all restricted gifts are recorded correctly and monies are spent in accordance with donor intent. Provides detailed accounting of all activity related to the Foundation’s endowed funds.
  • Coordinates timely month-end and year-end financial statement close processes.
  • Reviews departmental income statements to ensure transactions have been properly coded.
  • Reviews all general ledger account reconciliations for completeness and accuracy.
  • Investigates any unusual transactions and resolves timely.
  • Helps prepare key highlight financial reports.
  • Coordinates the annual financial statement audit with internal Darden stakeholders and external auditors by preparing Foundation’s financial statements and footnotes. Reviews staff-prepared audit schedules.
  • Completes the Foundation’s annual state charitable solicitations registration process.
  • Coordinates annual tax return preparation and associated filings (e.g., Form 990) with internal Darden stakeholders and external tax preparer.  
  • Stays abreast of changes in GAAP and regulatory requirements. Evaluates impact of any new authoritative changes on the Foundation and implements required changes.
  • Other duties as assigned, including preparation of analysis, research, and staff work as requested.

Professional qualities, experience and education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (or equivalent); CPA preferred
  • Strong academic qualifications, as well as demonstrated strong work ethic and performance record
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of work experience involving the oversight of accounting, three of which must be in a management capacity
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work across a complex organization
  • Collaborative team player that works well with colleagues in the Foundation and School
  • Demonstrates the highest levels of honor, trustworthiness and integrity in dealing with the financial accounting, reporting, and resources of the organization 
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics Navision Serenic Navigator accounting system or Microsoft Dynamics
